Poliploidizasyon is a phenomenon in which an organism acquires one or more additional sets of chromosomes. This results in cells that have more than two complete sets of chromosomes, a condition known as polyploidy. In diploid organisms, cells typically contain two sets of chromosomes, one inherited from each parent. Polyploid organisms, on the other hand, can have three sets (triploid), four sets (tetraploid), or even more sets of chromosomes.

This process can occur naturally in various organisms, particularly in plants, where it is a significant factor in evolution and speciation. Polyploidy can lead to changes in cell size, morphology, and reproductive characteristics, often resulting in larger plants or fruits. It can also contribute to hybrid vigor, where hybrid offspring exhibit enhanced traits compared to their parent species.

Poliploidizasyon can arise through errors during cell division, such as the failure of chromosomes to separate properly during meiosis or mitosis. In some cases, it can also be induced artificially for agricultural purposes, aiming to produce crops with desirable traits like increased yield or disease resistance. While common in plants, polyploidy is less frequent in animals, though it does occur in some species, including certain fish, amphibians, and insects. The genetic makeup of polyploid organisms is distinct, and their reproductive compatibility with diploid relatives can be affected, potentially leading to the formation of new species.
