poliitikaks

Poliitikaasutus (also referred to as poliitikaks in Estonian) is a stronghold or fortified family farmstead that existed in Estonia, particularly during the 16th to 19th centuries. These farmsteads were complex architectural structures consisting of a bastion, a fortified house, and outer wooden buildings.

The concept of poliitikaasutus originated as a response to the increased threat of raids and disputes over land during the late Middle Ages. Estonian farmhouses were gradually fortified, leading to the development of large, defended farmsteads that were capable of safeguarding not only the family's property but also its people.

Their defences included exterior walls made of stone or brick, as well as bastions (projecting fortified corner fortifications that offered enfilading fire along adjacent sections of wall). Sometimes the buildings consisted of complex and cramped living quarters, weapons depots, and armory.

There was also a notion that poliitikasutus symbolized the new type of social order which was certainly emerging throughout Estonia during this age. By the 17th century, however, many of the simple fortification bastions and defensive arrays began to disappear as local constabulary units and military training programs within city walls became more substantial. Although most fortifications eventually vanished or were storied down, the remnants of these securer vendors continue to appear fractionally preserved throughout remote sections of more central locations of Estonia.
