Poliesterët, commonly referred to as polyester, are a large class of polymers which contain an ester functional group in their main chain. Polyesters are found in nature, in plants of the family Dipterocarpaceae, but are also widely used in synthetic materials.

The most common type of polyester is polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is used for beverage bottles, films, and fibers. PET is known for its strength, transparency, and resistance to chemicals and impact. Other important polyesters include polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), used in engineering plastics and textiles, and polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT), which offers good stretch and recovery properties.

Polyesters are manufactured through a process called polycondensation, where monomers containing ester groups react with each other to form long polymer chains. They can be processed into a variety of forms, including fibers, films, sheets, and molded parts. Their versatility has led to widespread use in the textile industry for clothing and home furnishings, as well as in the automotive, electronics, and packaging sectors.

The properties of polyesters can be tailored by adjusting the type of monomers used, the polymerization process, and the addition of various additives. This allows for the creation of materials with specific characteristics such as elasticity, flame retardancy, or UV resistance.
