Polidiszperzitásának, a Hungarian term, translates to "polydispersity" in English. It is a concept used primarily in polymer science and materials science to describe the distribution of molecular weights within a sample of a polymer. Polymers are made up of long chains, and in a typical synthetic polymer sample, these chains will not all have the same length. Polydispersity quantifies this variation.

A polymer sample with a low polydispersity, meaning it has a narrow molecular weight distribution, is considered more uniform. This uniformity can lead to predictable and consistent material properties. Conversely, a high polydispersity indicates a wide range of chain lengths, which can result in a broader spectrum of properties and sometimes less predictable behavior.

The degree of polydispersity is often expressed as the polydispersity index (PDI), also known as the heterogeneity index. The PDI is calculated as the ratio of the weight-average molecular weight (Mw) to the number-average molecular weight (Mn). A PDI value of 1 indicates a perfectly monodisperse sample, where all polymer chains have the same molecular weight, which is rarely achieved in practice for synthetic polymers. Generally, synthetic polymers have PDIs greater than 1, often ranging from 1.5 to 5, while naturally occurring polymers can sometimes exhibit lower PDIs. Understanding polydispersity is crucial for controlling the processing and performance of polymeric materials.
