Policial is a term used in several Romance languages, most notably Portuguese and Spanish, to refer to matters related to the police or to police officers. In Portuguese, policial functions as both an adjective and a noun: as an adjective it describes police-related things, and as a noun it can denote a police officer (for example, um policial). In Spanish, policial is mainly an adjective describing police topics (for example, trabajo policial or force policial); the standard noun for a police officer is policía, with agente or funcionario policial used in some contexts.

Usage and regional variation vary. In Brazil and Portugal, the noun form policial is commonly used to refer to police officers, while in Spain and many Spanish-speaking countries the noun for a police officer is typically policía, and policial appears more often as an adjective. The term also appears in compound expressions such as cuerpos policiales (police forces) or actividad policial (police activity).

Etymology and cognates.
