Polarbene is a term encountered in organometallic and physical organic chemistry to describe a class of carbenes that exhibit pronounced polar character, i.e., a notable electronic charge separation around the carbene carbon. In polarbene structures, electron density is influenced by substituents or adjacent groups, which can create partial negative and partial positive regions on different parts of the molecule. The concept is related to the broader idea of polar carbenes and to zwitterionic or donor–acceptor carbene motifs.

Structure and bonding: Polarbene species are typically singlet carbenes with stabilization arising from resonance or conjugation with neighboring heteroatoms, π-systems, or metal centers. Polarization can be enhanced by strong electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents, or by metal–carbene interactions in complexes, which can shift electron density along the carbene fragment.

Generation and stabilization: Polarbene entities can be generated or isolated under controlled conditions via methods such as decomposition of diazo compounds, activation of suitable precursors, or carbene-transfer reactions. Stabilization often relies on protective groups, steric bulk, or coordination to a metal to prevent rapid dimerization or undesired reactions.

Reactivity and applications: The polarized electronic structure of polarbene ligands can influence the properties of associated metal centers, affecting catalytic activity in transformations like cross-coupling, cyclopropanation, and hydrofunctionalization. In organic synthesis, polar carbenes may participate in unique insertion, cycloaddition, or rearrangement pathways that differ from those of more traditional carbenes.
