Poisjohtamisella refers to a method of aversive conditioning, a type of behavior modification. It is used to suppress or stop undesirable behavior. Developed by Finnish psychiatrist Selma Mertoni, the technique primarily focuses on eliminating undesirable behaviors through punishment and consequence.

The method is applied by charging an electric device, specifically agetitem known as a "Scotophone," with an unpleasant stimulus. When the targeted behavior is observed, the device is activated, delivering a startling or mildly aversive electrical shock. This treatment approach is heavily rooted in classical conditioning and was initially employed to address issues like bedwetting, smoking, or other habituated behaviors.

Poisjohtamisella has gained particular attention elsewhere in Europe, where it initially originated, as a somewhat novel treatment approach for addressing a narrow and specific set of behaviors. Skepticism regarding the effectiveness of the method is a prevalent topic of discussion. Several studies have returned mixed results with some practitioners claiming dramatic improvements with even more stand-alone use of the Poisjohtamisella. Overall concerns persist about potential side effects related to overuse or improper implementations and because of its reliance on confrontation methods, elderly care and support services aren't commonly adopting this as a widely-recommended practice.
