Podjetja is the Slovenian term for companies or enterprises. They are legal entities or undertakings that engage in economic activity with the aim of producing goods or services and generating profit, as well as creating employment and value for shareholders, customers, and society.

In Slovenia, podjetja can take several legal forms, from sole proprietorships to larger stock corporations. The most common forms are družba z omejeno odgovornostjo (d.o.o.), a limited liability company, and delniška družba (d.d.), a joint-stock company. Other forms include komanditna družba (k.d.), a limited partnership, and samostojni podjetnik posameznik (s.p.), a sole proprietor. In addition, social enterprises and civil organizations may perform commercial activities within specific legal limits.

Formation and governance: Establishing a podjetje typically involves choosing a legal form, devising a business plan, and registering with the national business register. Governance depends on the legal form: owners or shareholders appoint management, and larger companies may have a supervisory board.

Finance and compliance: Companies maintain financial records in accordance with Slovenian accounting standards and report annual financial statements, sometimes with external audits. They are subject to corporate income tax and other local taxes.

Role and impact: Podjetja drive economic growth by producing goods and services, investing in capital, innovating, and contributing to employment. They operate in various sectors, from manufacturing to services, and can range from family-owned firms to multinational affiliates. Challenges include access to finance, regulatory compliance, digital transformation, and sustainability.
