A pneumatic tire is a tire that uses pressurized air to support a vehicle’s load and cushion shocks from the road. It is mounted on a wheel and encloses an air-filled cavity that absorbs impacts and transmits forces to the rim.

Most modern tires are tubeless, sealing directly against the rim and not requiring an inner tube. A tire’s essential components include the tread, sidewalls, carcass plies, steel belts or other reinforcements, bead wires to hold the tire on the rim, and an inner liner that retains air.

The concept of inflatable tires dates to the 19th century. Robert Thomson patented an air-filled tire in 1845, and John Boyd Dunlop popularized the modern pneumatic bicycle tire in the 1880s, rapidly expanding use in road vehicles.

Pneumatic tires come in tubed and tubeless forms, with additional run-flat variants that support limited vehicle operation after a puncture. They are employed on bicycles, motorcycles, passenger cars, light and heavy trucks, and aircraft to varying performance and load requirements.

Advantages include a smoother ride, better traction and handling, and greater shock absorption; drawbacks include susceptibility to punctures, pressure loss over time, and sensitivity to improper inflation.

Regularly check inflation to the vehicle or tire maker’s specification, ideally when cold; monitor tread depth and wear, inspect for cuts or bulges, and ensure tubeless tires are properly seated. Maintain tire pressure with temperature changes.
