Plumbness refers to the quality of being perfectly vertical. It is a fundamental concept in construction, engineering, and everyday life, ensuring that objects are positioned straight up and down relative to the force of gravity. A plumb object is aligned with the plumb line, an imaginary line extending directly towards the Earth's center.

The most common tool for determining plumbness is a plumb bob, also known as a plummet. This consists of a weight, typically a metal cone or cylinder, suspended from a string. When allowed to hang freely, the plumb bob will settle into a position that indicates true verticality due to gravity acting on its mass. Craftsmen and builders use plumb bobs to ensure that walls, posts, and other vertical elements are erected correctly.

Deviations from plumbness are referred to as being out of plumb or out of plumbness. This can lead to structural instability, aesthetic issues, and functional problems. For instance, a wall that is not plumb may not support upper floors evenly, or doors and windows installed in it might not operate properly. In surveying and architecture, maintaining plumbness is crucial for accurate measurements and the integrity of designs. While plumbness is idealized as perfect verticality, in practice, slight deviations are often acceptable depending on the application and relevant building codes or standards.
