Plesiosaurids were a diverse group of marine reptiles belonging to the order Plesiosauria. These animals flourished during the Mesozoic Era, appearing in the Early Jurassic period and persisting until the end of the Cretaceous period. Plesiosaurids are characterized by their long necks and tails, with four flipper-like limbs that propelled them through the water. Their bodies were generally broad and flattened, adapted for efficient swimming.

Fossil evidence indicates that plesiosaurids inhabited oceans worldwide. Their diet likely consisted of fish, squid, and other marine life, though the specific feeding strategies varied among different species. Some plesiosaurids, with their long necks and small heads, are thought to have employed a "swan-like" neck posture to ambush prey from below, while others with shorter necks and larger heads may have been more active hunters.

The classification of plesiosaurids has evolved over time with new discoveries. Traditionally, they were considered a distinct family within the Plesiosauria. However, modern cladistic analyses often place "plesiosaurid" as a paraphyletic group, meaning it includes an ancestor but not all of its descendants, or as a more broadly defined clade encompassing various families. Despite taxonomic debates, the general body plan and ecological role of these long-necked marine reptiles remain consistent in the fossil record. Their extinction coincided with the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event.
