Platencin is a natural product antibiotic produced by the actinomycete Streptomyces platensis. It is related to platensimycin and is part of the same family of fatty-acid biosynthesis inhibitors. Platencin acts by inhibiting enzymes in the bacterial type II fatty-acid synthase (FAS II) system, a essential pathway for membrane lipid production in many bacteria.

The compound was described in the context of discoveries from actinomycete screening, alongside the closely related platensimycin. It is typically isolated from cultures of Streptomyces platensis under conditions that promote secondary metabolite production. Like other FAS II inhibitors, platencin shows potent activity against several Gram-positive pathogens in vitro, including strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, with MIC values in low ranges.
