Plateøyer, literally “plate islands” in Danish and Norwegian, is a geological term used to describe small offshore landmasses that are closely tied to the tectonic plates on which they sit rather than to continental crust. The expression highlights that these islands often originate from processes associated with plate tectonics, such as volcanism and crustal uplift at plate boundaries. The term is mainly used in Nordic geoscience literature and is less common in English-language sources.

Formation and characteristics: Plateøyer typically arise where magma breaches the ocean floor at spreading centers, subduction zones, or volcanic hotspots. Repeated volcanic activity and tectonic uplift can elevate portions of the crust above sea level, forming islands. Over time, erosion and subsidence may modify their size and shape. They commonly display volcanic or basalt-derived geology, with soils that are shallow and poorly developed, limiting terrestrial biodiversity compared with continental islands.
