It is not a standardized material class but a design approach that emphasizes compatibility and engineered interfaces between different polymers, such as blends, co-extruded layers, or reinforced composites.

Common implementations include polymer blends where two or more polymers are compatibilized with coupling agents or block copolymers to improve interfacial adhesion; co-injection or co-extrusion forming multilayer structures; and plastics reinforced with fillers or fibers embedded within a plastic matrix to create a composite.
