Plasmaskærmene, often referred to as plasma displays, are a type of flat-panel display technology that uses small cells containing plasma. These cells are typically made of two glass panels separated by a small gap. Within this gap, a mixture of noble gases, such as neon and xenon, is introduced. When an electric voltage is applied to electrodes within the cells, the gas mixture is ionized, creating a plasma. This plasma then emits ultraviolet light.

This ultraviolet light then strikes a phosphorescent coating on the inside of the front glass panel. The phosphors absorb the ultraviolet radiation and re-emit visible light, creating the image seen on the screen. Different colors are produced by using different types of phosphors that emit red, green, or blue light when excited by the ultraviolet radiation. Plasmaskærmene were known for their excellent black levels, wide viewing angles, and fast response times, making them popular for larger screen televisions in the early 2000s. However, they were also characterized by higher power consumption and a susceptibility to "burn-in" if static images were displayed for extended periods. Production of plasmaskærmene has largely ceased, with LCD and OLED technologies now dominating the display market.
