Optimal temperature ranges vary by plant type. Cool-season crops such as lettuce and spinach thrive between 10°C and 18°C, while temperate crops like wheat and barley prefer 12°C to 24°C. Warm-season and tropical species—including cucumbers, tomatoes, and many herbs—require temperatures from 18°C to 30°C for maximal productivity. Each species also has a critical thermal threshold beyond which metabolic functions decline sharply, leading to stress or death.

Extreme temperatures have distinct impacts. High temperatures above a plant's optimum typically reduce stomatal conductance, diminish photosynthetic enzyme activity, and increase respiration losses, while low temperatures can cause cellular damage, frost injury, or halted growth. Temperature fluctuations can also favor pathogen development or insect infestation, further compromising plant vitality. Additionally, nocturnal temperatures affect nighttime respiration and recovery processes, so a balanced day–night temperature rhythm is essential.
