Plant groups, or planten groepen in Dutch, refers to the classification of plants into various categories based on shared characteristics. These classifications are fundamental to botany and ecology, helping scientists understand plant diversity, evolution, and relationships.

Common ways to group plants include their life cycle, such as annuals, biennials, and perennials. Annual plants complete their life cycle in one growing season, biennials in two, and perennials live for multiple years. Another significant grouping is based on their reproductive methods. This includes flowering plants (angiosperms), which produce flowers and fruits, and non-flowering plants like conifers (gymnosperms), ferns, mosses, and algae.

Ecological grouping is also prevalent, categorizing plants by their habitat or environment. Examples include aquatic plants living in water, xerophytes adapted to arid conditions, and mesophytes thriving in moderate moisture. Climatic conditions also lead to grouping, such as tropical plants, temperate plants, and alpine plants.

For instance, a perennial can also be a xerophyte if it lives for many years and is adapted to dry environments.
