Planteforædling, often translated as plant breeding, is the science and art of improving plants for the benefit of humankind. It involves the manipulation of plant genetics to enhance desirable traits or introduce new ones. This process has been fundamental to the development of agriculture, allowing for the cultivation of crops that are more productive, resilient, and nutritious.

Historically, plant breeding was largely a trial-and-error process based on observing natural variation within plant populations and selecting individuals with superior characteristics for reproduction. Early farmers would save seeds from their best-performing plants, gradually improving their crops over generations. This traditional approach, known as mass selection, laid the groundwork for modern plant breeding.

In the modern era, plant breeding has become a more systematic and scientific discipline. It utilizes knowledge of genetics, including Mendelian inheritance and quantitative genetics, to guide selection processes. Techniques such as hybridization, where desirable traits from two different parent plants are combined, are common. Marker-assisted selection (MAS) is a more advanced technique that uses DNA markers to identify desirable genes, allowing breeders to select for traits more efficiently and at an earlier stage of development.

The goals of plant breeding are diverse and depend on the specific crop and its intended use. Common objectives include increasing yield, improving resistance to pests and diseases, enhancing tolerance to environmental stresses like drought or salinity, and improving nutritional content or other quality attributes such as flavor and shelf life. Plant breeding also plays a crucial role in developing plants for non-agricultural uses, such as ornamental horticulture and forestry.
