Planktonmonsters is a term used to describe exceptionally large or unusually shaped organisms found within the planktonic community. Plankton are microscopic organisms that drift in bodies of water, forming the base of many aquatic food webs. While the vast majority of plankton are indeed microscopic, the term "planktonmonster" highlights notable exceptions. These can include exceptionally large individuals of common planktonic species, such as giant copepods or exceptionally large jellyfish which are technically zooplankton. The term can also be applied to colonial plankton that form large, visible structures, or to rare, large, and enigmatic planktonic organisms that defy easy classification.
