Plainbearing refers to a type of mechanical bearing that relies on a solid, non-lubricated interface between a rotating shaft and a stationary housing to support radial or axial loads. Unlike rolling-element bearings (such as ball or roller bearings), plain bearings do not use rolling elements to reduce friction; instead, they depend on a thin layer of fluid, solid, or semi-solid lubricant to separate the moving surfaces and minimize wear.

Plain bearings are widely used in various applications due to their simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and ability to handle high loads and speeds when properly lubricated. They are commonly found in machinery such as pumps, compressors, engines, and automotive components like crankshafts and camshafts. The design typically consists of a shaft rotating within a sleeve or bushing made of a softer, more wear-resistant material, such as bronze, aluminum, or plastic.

The performance of plain bearings depends heavily on lubrication. Hydrodynamic lubrication occurs when the rotating shaft generates a pressure field within the lubricant, lifting it off the bearing surface and reducing friction. Boundary lubrication, on the other hand, occurs at low speeds or high loads, where the lubricant film is too thin to fully separate the surfaces, requiring additives to prevent direct metal-to-metal contact. Solid lubricants, such as graphite or molybdenum disulfide, can also be used in dry or lightly lubricated conditions.

Plain bearings are classified into two main types: sleeve bearings and thrust bearings. Sleeve bearings support radial loads, while thrust bearings handle axial loads. They can be further categorized based on their construction, such as full journal bearings (360-degree contact) or partial bearings (less than 360-degree contact). The choice of material and lubrication strategy is critical in ensuring longevity and reliable operation, as improper conditions can lead to excessive wear, overheating, or failure.
