Plagioklaasikenttäspatin, also known as plagioclase feldspar, is a group of closely related silicate minerals that form a solid solution series within the feldspar family. It is one of the most abundant mineral groups in the Earth's crust, playing a crucial role in the composition of many igneous and metamorphic rocks. The name "plagioklasi" derives from the Greek words *plagios*, meaning oblique, and *klasis*, meaning fracture, referring to the mineral’s characteristic cleavage angles.

Plagioklase feldspars are tectosilicates, meaning their crystal structures are composed of a three-dimensional framework of silicon-oxygen tetrahedra. They exhibit a continuous range of chemical compositions between albite (sodium-rich) and anorthite (calcium-rich), with intermediate varieties such as oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytownite. This compositional variability allows plagioclase to adapt to various geological environments, influencing the physical and chemical properties of host rocks.

In igneous rocks, plagioklase feldspar commonly forms as phenocrysts or groundmass minerals, often appearing as white, gray, or pale-colored crystals. Its presence in volcanic rocks like basalt and granite helps determine their classification and geological history. In metamorphic rocks, plagioclase may recrystallize during regional or contact metamorphism, contributing to the development of textures such as granoblastic aggregates.

Plagioklase feldspar is also notable for its optical properties, including twinning and pleochroism, which can be observed under a polarizing microscope. Its cleavage is distinct, often appearing as two intersecting planes at approximately 86–90 degrees, aiding in its identification in hand specimens. While generally stable under surface conditions, plagioklase can alter to clay minerals or other secondary phases through weathering, particularly in humid climates.

Beyond geological significance, plagioklase feldspar has practical applications, including use as a gemstone in varieties like labradorite, which exhibits iridescent play-of-color, and as an industrial mineral in ceramics and glass manufacturing. Its widespread occurrence and structural diversity make it a fundamental component in the study of rock-forming processes.
