A pitchout is a baseball play where the pitcher intentionally throws the ball wide of home plate, making it virtually impossible for the batter to hit. This maneuver is typically employed to prevent a runner from stealing a base, particularly when the runner is fast or the catcher has a strong arm but is struggling with accurate throws.

The primary purpose of a pitchout is to gain an advantage in a steal attempt. By throwing the ball so far outside, the pitcher forces the catcher to step away from the plate to field the ball. This extra movement allows the catcher more time to get a clean grip and make a throw to the intended base, usually second or third. The element of surprise is also a factor; batters may be caught off guard by the unusual pitch, and a strikeout on a pitchout can be a valuable outcome.

Pitchouts are most commonly used to prevent a stolen base when a count is favorable to the batter, such as a 3-0 or 3-1 count, where the batter is less likely to swing. It can also be used when a catcher has a strong arm but needs a little extra time to make the throw. However, a pitchout carries risks. If the pitch is too far off, it can be a wild pitch or a passed ball, potentially allowing runners to advance. It also puts the pitcher in a hitter's count, which could be disadvantageous if the steal attempt is unsuccessful.
