Pistekirjoituslaitteet, known in English as dot matrix printers, are a category of computer printers that produce an image by striking an ink-soaked ribbon against the paper with a print head. The print head contains a matrix of small pins, typically 7 or 9, that are driven by electromagnets. When a pin is activated, it extends forward and makes contact with the ribbon, transferring a dot of ink to the paper. By selectively firing these pins in a specific sequence, the printer can form characters and graphics.

These printers were widely popular for their durability, low operating cost, and ability to print multi-part forms using carbonless copy paper. The print quality was characterized by a distinctive dot pattern, which made them less suitable for high-resolution graphics or precise text compared to later technologies like inkjet or laser printing. However, their robustness made them ideal for demanding environments such as offices, warehouses, and industrial settings where continuous printing was required.

The technology has largely been superseded by more advanced printing methods due to their noise level and print quality limitations. Nevertheless, some specialized applications, particularly those requiring continuous forms or on-site printing in harsh conditions, may still utilize dot matrix technology. The printing process involves the print head moving horizontally across the page, with pins firing to create characters and lines as it progresses. The speed of these printers is often measured in characters per second (cps).
