Pioenbloem is the Dutch word for peony. Peonies are flowering plants in the genus Paeonia, the only genus in the subtribe Paeoniinae of the family Paeoniaceae. They are native to Asia, Europe, and western North America. Peonies are popular ornamental plants, cultivated for their large, showy flowers.

The genus Paeonia is divided into three sections: herbaceous peonies, tree peonies, and intersectional peonies (also known as Itoh peonies). Herbaceous peonies die back to the ground in winter and regrow from perennial roots in spring. Tree peonies are woody shrubs that do not die back and retain their stems throughout the year. Intersectional peonies are a hybrid cross between herbaceous and tree peonies, exhibiting characteristics of both.

Peony flowers come in a wide range of colors, including white, pink, red, coral, and yellow. They can be single-petaled, double-petaled, or have bomb-like forms. The blooming season for peonies typically occurs in late spring to early summer, depending on the variety and climate. Peonies are known for their long lifespan, with some plants living for decades. They are often associated with romance, prosperity, and good fortune.
