One of the most prevalent forms of pinless measurement is the use of a non-contact voltage tester. These handheld devices utilize capacitive coupling to detect the electromagnetic field produced by alternating current (AC) voltage. When the tester is brought near a live AC conductor, it indicates the presence of voltage, typically through an audible beep and/or a visual light. This allows for quick checks to determine if a circuit is energized before commencing work.

Another application of pinless measurement is in clamp meters. These devices feature jaws that can be opened and clamped around a conductor. They are primarily used to measure electrical current.
