Piilukkokivääri, also known as flintlock rifle, is a type of firearm that was prevalent from the early 17th century to the mid-19th century. Its defining characteristic is the flintlock mechanism, which ignites the gunpowder charge in the pan to fire the projectile. This mechanism replaced earlier ignition systems like the matchlock and wheellock.

The flintlock works by a spring-loaded hammer, which holds a piece of flint. When the trigger is pulled, the hammer falls, striking a steel frizzen. This impact creates sparks that ignite the priming powder in the pan. The flash from the pan then travels through a small vent hole (touchhole) into the barrel, igniting the main charge of gunpowder behind the bullet.

Piilukkokivääreitä varied in design and purpose. Military versions, often called muskets, were typically smoothbore and designed for massed infantry use. Rifled versions, or hunting rifles, featured spiral grooves inside the barrel that imparted spin to the bullet, significantly increasing accuracy. These rifles were often more complex and expensive.

The loading process for a piilukkokivääri was manual and relatively slow. The shooter would first pour gunpowder into the barrel, followed by a projectile (often a lead ball or a Minié ball in later models) and a patch or wadding. This made them less suitable for rapid firing during combat. Despite their limitations, piilukkokivääreitä played a crucial role in warfare and hunting for centuries before being superseded by percussion cap and eventually cartridge-based firearms.
