Phosphorusorganic, commonly referred to as organophosphorus compounds, denotes a broad class of organic chemicals that contain phosphorus atoms bonded to carbon or integrated into phosphorus–oxygen frameworks. These compounds are defined by the presence of carbon–phosphorus bonds and often feature phosphorus in oxidation states around +3 or +5. They contrast with inorganic phosphorus species such as simple phosphates or phosphides.

The chemistry of organophosphorus compounds spans several structural motifs. Key families include phosphate esters, where a phosphorus center bears multiple alkoxy or aryloxy groups (P(=O)(OR)3); phosphonates, which contain direct P–C bonds to carbon substituents (R–PO(OR')2 or related arrangements); and phosphorothioates, where sulfur partially replaces oxygen in analogous frameworks. Organophosphines (PR3) and related phosphorus ligands also form an important subcategory, often used in catalysis. These varieties support a wide range of reactivity and applications in synthesis, biology, and materials science. Phosphorus–oxygen–carbon motifs are also central to biologically important molecules such as nucleotide phosphates and ATP.

Applications and significance are broad. Organophosphorus compounds are found in agriculture as pesticides and herbicides (for example, certain organophosphates and phosphonates), in flame retardants and plasticizers, and as specialized catalysts and ligands. They also appear in pharmaceuticals and as intermediates in organic synthesis. On the biological side, phosphorus-containing esters and phosphonates underpin essential biomolecules and energy transfer processes.

Safety and regulation are major considerations. Many organophosphorus compounds are highly toxic, acting as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, and are subject to strict handling, disposal, and environmental controls. Research continues to balance useful applications with health and ecological safeguards.
