Phosphonates are a class of organophosphorus compounds that contain the phosphonate group, typically described as a phosphorus(V) center bonded to one or more substituents, including carbon, via P–C bonds, and to oxygen. The phosphonate group is the deprotonated or esterified form of phosphonic acid and often confers strong metal‑binding properties. A prominent subset is bisphosphonates, in which two phosphonate groups are attached to a single carbon atom; this family includes drugs such as alendronate and risedronate, used to treat osteoporosis.
