Phonoforsterkeren, which translates to "phono amplifier" in Norwegian, is a specialized audio device designed to boost the signal from a phonograph cartridge to a level suitable for a standard amplifier or receiver. Phonograph cartridges, particularly those with a Moving Magnet (MM) or Moving Coil (MC) design, produce a very weak electrical signal. This signal needs to be amplified significantly and also equalized according to the RIAA curve to accurately reproduce the sound etched into a vinyl record.

Without a dedicated phono amplifier, connecting a turntable directly to a typical line-level input on an amplifier would result in extremely low volume and an unnatural tonal balance.
