The term *phalansterians* refers to the inhabitants or adherents of the *phalanstery*, a communal living arrangement proposed by the French philosopher Charles Fourier in the early 19th century. Fourier’s utopian socialist theory envisioned the phalanstery as a self-sustaining, cooperative community designed to eliminate poverty, labor exploitation, and social inequality by reorganizing society around small, harmonious work groups.

Fourier’s phalansteries were intended to house around 1,600 people, organized into 800 families, with shared living spaces, dining halls, and recreational areas. Each member would engage in multiple "passions" (occupations) aligned with their natural inclinations, ensuring variety and fulfillment. The system aimed to maximize productivity through collective labor while prioritizing individual happiness and social cohesion.

While Fourier’s ideas gained some traction in Europe and North America during the 19th century, particularly among Fourierist movements, few phalansteries were ever fully realized. Some experimental communities, such as the *New Harmony* collective in Indiana (though not strictly Fourierist) and short-lived attempts in France, attempted to implement aspects of his vision. Despite limited success, Fourier’s concepts influenced later socialist and cooperative movements, including anarchist communal experiments and modern cooperative housing models.

The phalanstery remains a theoretical ideal rather than a widely adopted practice, serving primarily as a historical example of utopian socialism and communal living. Fourier’s work continues to be studied for its critique of capitalism and its proposals for alternative social organization.
