Phagocytizing is a biological process where a cell engulfs and digests foreign particles or other cells. The term comes from the Greek words "phagein" meaning "to eat" and "kytos" meaning "cell". This essential cellular mechanism is primarily carried out by specialized cells known as phagocytes.

In multicellular organisms, phagocytizing is a crucial part of the innate immune system. Phagocytes, such as macrophages and neutrophils, patrol the body, identifying and engulfing pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and fungi. They also remove cellular debris, dead cells, and other unwanted materials, playing a vital role in tissue maintenance and repair. The process begins when a phagocyte recognizes a target particle, often through specific surface receptors. The phagocyte then extends its cell membrane, forming pseudopods, which surround and enclose the particle in a membrane-bound vesicle called a phagosome.

Once internalized, the phagosome fuses with lysosomes, which are organelles containing powerful digestive enzymes and reactive oxygen species. This fusion creates a phagolysosome, where the ingested material is broken down into smaller molecules that can be reused or expelled by the cell. Phagocytizing is not limited to immune cells; some single-celled organisms, like amoebas, also use this process to acquire nutrients from their environment.
