Petrolelectric refers to a hybrid power system that combines a petroleum-fueled internal combustion engine with an electric motor. In this setup, the internal combustion engine acts as a generator, producing electricity that is then used to power the electric motor or charge a battery. This system is distinct from a traditional hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) where the internal combustion engine can directly drive the wheels. In a petrolelectric system, the engine's sole purpose is to generate electricity.

The primary advantage of a petrolelectric system is improved fuel efficiency. By allowing the internal combustion engine to operate within its most efficient range, and by recovering energy through regenerative braking, the system can significantly reduce fuel consumption compared to a conventional vehicle. This also leads to lower emissions. The electric motor provides instant torque, offering smooth acceleration and quiet operation, especially at lower speeds.

However, petrolelectric systems can be more complex and expensive to manufacture due to the additional components, including a generator, battery pack, and power electronics. The performance can also be perceived as less direct than a conventional powertrain, as the engine is not directly connected to the wheels. Examples of petrolelectric configurations can be found in some hybrid vehicles and range extenders for electric vehicles, where the internal combustion engine serves as a backup to recharge the battery when it is depleted.
