Petrifikací, often translated as petrification, is a fossilization process where an organism's remains are gradually replaced by minerals. This process typically occurs when an organism dies and is rapidly buried by sediment, such as mud, sand, or volcanic ash. This burial protects the remains from decay and scavengers, creating an environment conducive to mineralization.

Over time, groundwater rich in dissolved minerals, like silica, calcite, or pyrite, seeps through the sediment and into the organism's porous tissues. As the water passes, the organic material slowly dissolves and is simultaneously replaced by the mineral precipitates. This mineral replacement can preserve the fine details of the original organism, including cellular structures, in a stone-like form.

The rate and extent of petrifikací depend on several factors, including the mineral composition of the groundwater, the type of original organic material, and the burial conditions. Different minerals can lead to different types of fossilization; for example, silicification results in silica-rich fossils, while calcification leads to calcite-rich ones. Wood that undergoes this process is known as petrified wood, which can retain the intricate patterns of the original tree rings and cellular structure. Petrifikací is a key mechanism in the formation of many paleontological fossils.
