Peruspesu, meaning “basic wash” in Finnish, is a standard washing cycle used on many household washing machines and, in some models, on dishwashers. It is designed for normally soiled everyday textiles and aims to clean effectively while balancing energy, water, and time consumption. The program is typically suitable for common fabrics such as cotton and linen blends, and it is often the default cycle selected for mixed loads.

Operation and settings commonly associated with peruspesu include moderate to warm water temperatures, typically around 40 to 60 degrees Celsius, with some models offering around 30 degrees Celsius for energy savings. The wash duration is usually in the range of about 60 to 120 minutes, and spin speeds vary from moderate to high, depending on the machine. Detergent should be regular washing powder or liquid appropriate for the fabric being washed. Prewash is rarely required for standard loads, but some models offer it as an option.

Limitations of the cycle include its unsuitability for delicate fabrics such as silk or wool, heavy-duty or heavily soiled items, or garments requiring gentle handling. For those cases, other cycles such as delicates or heavy-duty options are recommended.

In Finnish appliance labeling, peruspesu is often presented as the normal or regular wash option, and many newer machines label it as “Normal” or “Regular” in English-language interfaces. The cycle reflects a balance between cleaning performance and everyday efficiency.
