Perimetritutkimukset, often referred to as visual field testing, are a diagnostic tool used in ophthalmology and optometry to assess a person's peripheral (side) and central vision. This examination maps out the extent of an individual's visual field, identifying any blind spots or areas where vision is diminished.

The process typically involves the patient fixating on a central point of light or an image while small lights or targets are presented at various locations within their field of vision. The patient indicates when they see each light, either by pressing a button or responding verbally. Sophisticated instruments, known as perimeters, present these stimuli in a controlled manner, measuring the sensitivity of the retina at different points.

Perimetritutkimukset are crucial for diagnosing and monitoring a range of eye conditions that affect the visual pathway, including glaucoma, optic nerve damage, stroke-related visual field defects, and certain neurological disorders. Early detection of visual field loss can be vital in managing these conditions and preserving remaining vision.
