A penciler is an artist who draws the initial drawings for comic books, graphic novels, or other sequential art. This role involves translating a script into visual form, establishing the characters, settings, and action. The penciler's work is the foundation upon which the rest of the comic's art is built, including inking and coloring. They are responsible for the composition, figure drawing, perspective, and overall visual storytelling.

The process typically begins with the penciler receiving a script from the writer. They then break down the script into individual panels, deciding on camera angles, character poses, and facial expressions to convey the intended emotion and narrative. The penciler's rough drawings are often referred to as "pencils," even though they are usually made with graphite pencils or specialized non-photo blue pencils. These pencils are then sent to an inker, who refines the lines, adds depth and texture, and prepares the artwork for coloring.
