Pehmytukikudosten, Finnish for soft tissues, are the tissues that support, connect, and surround other structures in the body. The term encompasses connective tissue proper (loose and dense), adipose tissue, fascia, skeletal muscle, nerves, blood vessels, and related components. It excludes mineralized hard tissues such as bone and teeth.

Histologically, soft tissues have relatively low mineral content and a matrix rich in collagen and elastin, with resident cells including fibroblasts, adipocytes, myocytes, endothelial cells, and glial or nerve-supporting cells. The exact composition varies by tissue type, from loose areolar tissue to dense connective tissue and specialized muscles.

Functions include mechanical support, transmission of force, cushioning, energy storage, insulation, and roles in immune and inflammatory responses. Soft tissues also play a key part in wound healing and regeneration, although scar formation can occur.

Clinical relevance: Soft tissue injuries are common in sports and daily life, ranging from contusions and strains to tendinopathies and fasciitis. Treatment depends on the tissue and injury and may include rest, physical therapy, compression, and in some cases surgical repair. The term reflects both everyday tissues and specialized structures within the musculoskeletal system.
