Pattern welding is a metalworking technique used to produce blades and other objects with visible layered patterns. It forges together multiple sheets of steel and iron in alternating compositions and then shapes the billet. The layered structure can combine different properties, such as hardness and toughness, and the contrast between metals is revealed by grinding and etching to create the decorative pattern.

Process: Steel layers are selected for differing carbon content and alloying elements. The stack is cleaned, fluxed, and forge-welded at high temperature. The billet may be folded, twisted, or rearranged to form patterns. After forging, the blade is ground and finished, and an acid etch reveals the contrasting regions produced by the different metals.

History and terminology: Pattern welding is closely associated with Damascus steel, but it is a distinct technique. Ancient Damascus patterns arose from crucible steels and corrosion, while modern practice was revived in the 19th–20th centuries and remains popular for functional blades and decorative pieces. The term pattern welded distinguishes the modern layered-weld from historical wootz Damascus.

Materials and patterns: Common core steels include carbon steels such as 1084 or 1095, with contrast steels containing nickel like 15N20 to highlight patterns. Other alloys may be added for color or texture. Patterns range from ladders and twists to raindrops and feathers, created by arranging layers before final welding.

Applications and considerations: Pattern-welded blades offer a balance of edge stability, toughness, and appearance. They require careful heat treatment and finishing to realize contrast, and production is more labor-intensive than monosteel blades. Patterns may persist through use but can be altered by sharpening and wear.
