Patogeneesist is a term encountered in some contexts to denote the study of patogenesis, the development and progression of disease. In medical literature the more common English term is pathogenesis, which describes the sequence of events from the initial cause to the appearance of clinical symptoms. Patogeneesist may appear in translations or as a synonym in certain languages, but its core concept aligns with understanding how diseases originate and evolve.

Pathogenesis encompasses the causal factors (etiology) and the biological mechanisms that translate those factors into tissue damage and clinical manifestations. It integrates initiating events, intermediate molecular and cellular processes, and eventual organ dysfunction.
