The word "patkány" is the Hungarian word for rat. Rats are medium-sized, long-tailed rodents belonging to the genus Rattus. They are known for their intelligence, adaptability, and prolific breeding habits, which have allowed them to colonize nearly every region of the world alongside humans.

Two species are most commonly associated with human dwellings: the black rat (Rattus rattus) and the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus). Black rats are typically smaller and more agile, often found in the upper levels of buildings. Brown rats are larger and more robust, preferring to burrow at ground level or in sewers. In Hungarian culture and language, "patkány" can carry negative connotations, often used metaphorically to describe a despicable or untrustworthy person. This association likely stems from the historical perception of rats as pests that spread disease and damage property.
