The term derives from the Belarusian word pasìl, meaning “to weave,” reflecting the genre’s characteristic intertwining of narrative prose with lyrical stanzas. Pasilyms typically recount historical or folkloric episodes, embedding them within a rhythmic framework that alternates between continuous prose passages and structured verses that adhere to traditional metrical patterns such as trochaic tetrameter.
