Partikelavkänning, also known as particle sensing, refers to the detection and measurement of particulate matter in a medium, most commonly air or water. This technology is crucial for monitoring environmental quality, assessing health risks, and controlling industrial processes. Particulate matter consists of tiny solid or liquid particles suspended in the air, with diameters ranging from a few nanometers to several hundred micrometers. These particles can originate from natural sources like dust and pollen, or from anthropogenic activities such as combustion, industrial emissions, and vehicle exhaust.

Various methods exist for particle sensing. Optical particle counters (OPCs) are widely used. They work by passing a stream of air through a chamber where a light beam, typically a laser, illuminates the particles. As particles pass through the beam, they scatter light. Detectors then measure the intensity and pattern of this scattered light, allowing for the determination of particle size and concentration. Other techniques include gravimetric analysis, where a known volume of air is drawn through a filter, and the mass of collected particles is weighed. Condensation particle counters (CPCs) are used for detecting very small particles, often below the detection limit of OPCs, by first growing them to a measurable size through condensation.

The data obtained from particle sensing is vital for understanding air pollution levels, informing public health advisories, and implementing effective pollution control strategies. In industrial settings, particle sensing can monitor the efficiency of filtration systems, detect leaks, and ensure product quality. The ongoing development in this field focuses on miniaturization, increased sensitivity, and real-time monitoring capabilities.
