Pariteitsargumenten, also known as parity arguments, are a technique used in mathematics and computer science to reason about the properties of numbers, particularly their evenness or oddness (parity). For example, adding two even numbers results in an even number, adding two odd numbers results in an even number, and adding an even and an odd number results in an odd number. Similarly, multiplication follows patterns: even times even is even, odd times odd is odd, and even times odd is even.

These simple rules can be used to prove various mathematical statements. For instance, one might use a parity argument to show that a certain problem has no solution. If a problem requires an odd number of a specific type of object but all possible configurations lead to an even number of those objects, then a parity argument demonstrates impossibility. In computer science, parity bits are used for error detection. A parity bit is an extra bit added to a binary string to make the total number of '1's either even or odd. If a bit flips during transmission, the parity check will fail, indicating an error. Parity arguments are a fundamental tool for simplifying complex problems by focusing on a single, crucial property.
