Parathormone (PTH) is a peptide hormone produced by the chief cells of the parathyroid glands. Its primary function is to regulate calcium levels in the blood. When blood calcium levels are low, the parathyroid glands release PTH, which acts on the bones, kidneys, and intestines to increase calcium levels. PTH stimulates the breakdown of bone tissue, releasing calcium into the bloodstream. It also promotes calcium reabsorption in the kidneys and enhances calcium absorption in the intestines. Conversely, when blood calcium levels are high, PTH secretion decreases, allowing calcium levels to return to normal.
Parathormone levels are typically measured to diagnose and monitor conditions related to calcium metabolism, such as
Parathormone levels are measured using a blood test, typically an intact PTH (iPTH) assay. The reference range
