Paralyyssi is a term used in some sources to refer to paralysis, the loss or impairment of voluntary muscle function due to disruption of the nervous system or primary muscle disease. In this article, paralyyssi is treated as a broad symptom category that can arise from a variety of underlying causes and presentations.

Causes and types of paralyyssi are commonly distinguished by location and mechanism. Central paralyyssi involves the brain or spinal cord, as seen after a stroke or spinal cord injury. Peripheral paralyyssi involves nerves or neuromuscular junctions, such as in Guillain-Barré syndrome or neuropathies. Myopathic paralyyssi results from primary muscle disorders like muscular dystrophy. Emergency care may be required for acute spinal injury; otherwise, interventions can include physical and occupational therapy, medications for autoimmune or infectious etiologies, surgery for nerve or spine problems, and assistive devices. Prognosis varies widely with the cause, location, and timeliness of treatment, ranging from full recovery to permanent disability. Preventive and rehabilitative strategies focus on reducing complications and optimizing function.
