Parallaxvirhe, often translated as parallax error, is a common phenomenon in measurement and observation. It occurs when an observer's eye is not positioned directly in front of the point being measured, leading to an apparent shift in the position of an object relative to its background. This shift causes the reading to be inaccurate.

The principle of parallax is best illustrated with a simple experiment. Hold your finger out at arm's length and close one eye. Note the position of your finger against a distant background. Now, without moving your finger, close the other eye and open the first. You will observe that your finger appears to have moved relative to the background. This apparent movement is the parallax. The closer the object, the greater the parallax.

In scientific and technical contexts, parallax error can significantly impact the accuracy of readings from instruments like rulers, scales, and analog gauges. For example, when reading a thermometer, if the observer's eye is too high or too low, the mercury column may appear to be at a different level than it actually is. To minimize parallax error, it is crucial to position your eye directly in line with the measurement mark and the object being measured. Many modern instruments are designed with features to reduce parallax, such as mirrored scales.

The concept of parallax is also fundamental in astronomy. Astronomers use stellar parallax to measure the distance to nearby stars. By observing a star's apparent position from two different points in Earth's orbit around the sun (typically six months apart), a small shift, or parallax, is detected. This shift, combined with the known diameter of Earth's orbit, allows for the calculation of the star's distance. However, for very distant stars, the parallax angle becomes too small to measure accurately, and other methods are employed.
