Parafiinihoidon, commonly known as paraffin wax treatment, is a therapeutic application of warm paraffin wax. It is primarily used in physical therapy, rehabilitation, and cosmetic treatments. In a therapeutic setting, paraffin wax is melted and then applied to a limb, typically a hand or foot, by dipping it into the molten wax multiple times to create a thick coating. The limb is then wrapped in plastic and covered with a mitt or towel to retain heat for a specific duration, usually 15-20 minutes.

The heat from the paraffin wax is believed to help increase blood flow, reduce joint stiffness, relax muscles, and alleviate pain associated with conditions like arthritis and rheumatism. The waxy coating also leaves the skin feeling soft and moisturized, which is why it is also popular in spas and beauty treatments for dry or rough skin. Before application, the wax is heated to a temperature that is comfortably warm, not hot, to avoid burns. After the treatment, the hardened wax is peeled off. Paraffin treatments are generally safe but should be avoided by individuals with open wounds, skin infections, or impaired sensation in the treated area.
