paperilaput

Paperilaput are labels or tags made of paper, used to identify or describe objects. The term is Finnish, formed from paperi (paper) and lappu (label or tag); the plural is paperilaput.

Forms and materials: They include adhesive paper labels, price tags, file labels, and craft tags. They may be printed on standard label stock or card, and can be handwritten or computer-printed. Durability varies; some are plain paper, others use coated or waterproof finishes.

Uses: In retail, paperilaput display prices and product information; in archives and libraries they label files and containers; in museums they tag exhibits; in households they organize arts and crafts or labeling jars and boxes.

Context and evolution: With digital labeling, barcode and RFID labels have supplanted many traditional paperilaput, but paper labels remain common for temporary use, low-cost packaging, education projects, and decorative crafts.
