Pankkitunnistus is the Finnish online authentication method provided by Finnish banks. It enables individuals to identify themselves and authorize actions in online services. It is the most widely used electronic identification method in Finland and is accepted by many public authorities as well as private service providers.

How it works: When accessing a service that supports pankkitunnistus, the user selects the method, and the service redirects to the bank's login system. The user signs in with their online banking credentials and confirms the login with a second factor, such as a push notification in the bank's mobile app or a one-time code generated by a card reader. The bank issues an electronic identity assertion that the service can trust, completing the login.

Providers and scope: The system is operated by member banks of the Finnish banking sector and is integrated with government online services via Suomi.fi. It is used for tax, social security, health services, and many other sectors, in addition to private services.

Security and privacy: Pankkitunnistus uses two-factor authentication and strong encryption. The user's personal data is not freely shared with the service; instead, the service receives an assertion that proves identity. The banks are responsible for authentication and data processing; there are privacy protections under Finnish law.

Limitations and future: It requires enrollment in a participating bank account and online banking. Some foreigners or people without Finnish bank accounts may not have access. Banks continue to update the system, and other e-identification methods are being developed; however pankkitunnistus remains widely used.
