Paleoökológia, also known as paleoecology, is the scientific study of past ecosystems. It aims to reconstruct the environments and ecological interactions of past life forms, using evidence preserved in the geological record. This field draws upon various disciplines including paleontology, geology, botany, zoology, and climatology to understand how ancient organisms lived, interacted with each other, and responded to environmental changes over geological time.

The primary sources of information for paleoökológia include fossils, which can be of organisms themselves or their traces (trace fossils), as well as sedimentological and geochemical data. For example, fossil pollen and spores found in lakebed sediments or rock layers can reveal the types of plants that grew in an area and provide insights into past climates. The study of fossilized communities, such as ancient reefs or forests, helps reconstruct trophic structures and species diversity. Similarly, isotopic analysis of fossilized shells or teeth can indicate diet and water sources.

Paleoökológia plays a crucial role in understanding long-term ecological processes, evolutionary history, and the impact of environmental changes, such as climate shifts, sea-level fluctuations, and volcanic activity, on life. By studying past ecological collapses or recoveries, scientists can gain valuable perspectives on current and future environmental challenges, including biodiversity loss and climate change.
